Roanoke Rock Fish 2011

First Striper of the year: 19 1/2in.  3-4pounds
Had a Crazy trip down east, fished Weldon on Friday and only caught one fish, which made a very nice dinner. Then we headed to Merchants Mill Pond for some camping and bass fishing: camping was great bass fishing was poor. Saturday we Paddled out of Merchants and headed to the Chowan River and fished in 45mph wind gusts, no luck. To top it all off, we then preceded to "Tread the Needle" west through some of the nastiest storms NC has seen in many years. Crazy first Trip down east!!!

Haw River Walk...

Hickory Shad

White Bass : I think my biggest so far...

The Bite's Back On!

After a week of poor fishing due to a cold snap and cold rains, the fish are finally back eating and moving up into the river. Little windy today so i decided to walk instead of paddle, and did very well with mixed bag of white bass, crappie, shad, and white perch. Caught about 20 fish in around midday, the bite really turned on right at noon and weened off around 3ish. Fished a new lure called a rebel track-down minnow, which i really liked and so did the fish!!

Merchant's Mill Pond State Park

Mystery Shot?  Who know what this is?

North Carolina has shown me many beautiful and captivating places and Merchant's Mill Pond and connecting Lassiter Swamp is close to the top of my list. Kinda a special place for me, my dad first took me here on a paddling/camping trip when i was fourteen, since then I have returned over 30 times to explore, fish and photograph it's unusual ecosystem.

Bald Cypress Knees

As for Fishing,  it's incredible at the right times. I've personally caught bass, bowfin, crappie, nice bream, and gar on light spinning gear and by fly fishing. Early spring can be great for bass on small plastic worms and in-line spinners or beetle spins.  One evening it seemed that every cast anywhere you tossed your worm it would take off before you could flip the bail. That evening we fished small dark colored plastics with no weight, cast and twitch. Explosive strikes near the surface on plastics can be lots of fun, I figure the bass think it's a small snake wiggling around.
