Common Brown Water Snake Swannee River Fl. Spring 2007 |
So just the other evening Baker talked me into taking her crappie fishing on the Haw river around 5pm. Everything was going great we caught a ton of nice crappie, few white bass and a cool looking flat-head catfish. It was just starting to get dark when i saw what looked like another bobber floating about ten feet from the boat. Baker turned the flashlight on right in time to see a good 3 foot long Copperhead heading straight for our Boat (canoe). Believe me, the snake identification was very easy because of its proximity to our craft, plus i know every snake in NC well. Man, i thought it was weird that it was moving fast right at us, but figured when I gave it a gentle tap it would move off the other direction. Nope, the dang snake kept coming at the boat hard, and biting at my paddle. At this time it was heading toward the rear of the boat raising up like it was trying to get in and bite us, so i gave a not so gentle push/shove away from the back of the boat. This moved the snake about ten feet away, and I pulled up the anchor and drifted away from that bad boy. Baker was great she held the light on that snake the whole time, thanks babe! It's rare for a snake to be that aggressive, guess it's always good to keep your wits about you, never know what's sneakin up on ya...
